Douglas Slaughter is a dedicated public servant whose commitment is founded on the belief that schools thrive when they wisely leverage local resources to support every student every day, promoting access, equity, inclusion, and belonging. With a background that includes deep technical knowledge and extensive experience in municipal finance and governance, he brings a unique perspective to ensuring that resources are maximized to build staffing reflective of the student and community populations.


A lifelong learner, Mr. Slaughter holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from UMass Amherst. He began his career in education in the Amherst schools in 2007 as a Database Analyst before moving into school finance, serving as the Finance Director starting in 2020, and most recently as the Interim Superintendent for the 2023-2024 school year. In each role, he has focused on sound fiscal stewardship, expanding opportunities for students, and strengthening inclusive school communities.


Mr. Slaughter came to the Hampden-Wilbraham Regional School District (HWRSD) in January of 2025 as the Assistant Superintendent for Finance, Operations, and Human Resources. Before this, his deep commitment to community service was demonstrated through his active participation in his home community of Amherst, where he served as a Town Meeting Member, Finance Committee Member, Joint Capital Planning Committee Member, PVTA Advisory Board Representative, and Select Board Member. He is committed to working with the entire Hampden-Wilbraham community to ensure that all students have the resources they need for future success.
